Team Singapore athlete charged with 2 rape counts involving girl, 12

What's next: The case returns to court on July 30, and the athlete's carding support has been suspended pending proceedings.

A Team Singapore athlete was charged in Singapore with two counts of rape and one count of committing an indecent act with a child in a case involving a 12-year-old girl. Court records cited by Channel News Asia said the accused was 17 at the time of the alleged offences, so he cannot be identified under the Children and Young Persons Act. The charges stem from a single incident at a housing block in Bukit Batok after he allegedly got to know the girl online. A gag order protects the girl's identity. Sports associations linked to his sport said they learned of the charges on July 2 and immediately suspended his carding support. If convicted of rape, he could face up to 20 years in jail, a fine or caning.
