Tata sees AI agents replacing half of TCS tech jobs over time

Why it matters: TCS employs about 600,000 people, making any hiring slowdown or cuts a major test for India’s IT services model.

Tata Chair Natarajan Chandrasekaran said AI agents could eventually replace half the jobs at Tata Consultancy Services, signaling a deeper shift at India’s biggest software exporter as it leans harder into automation. Speaking at TCS’s shareholder meeting on June 9, he said the company would likely cut hiring as AI use expands and predicted TCS could one day have as many AI agents as human workers. The comments land as TCS, which employs roughly 600,000 people, pivots toward higher-margin businesses. The company has already said it planned to cut 12,000 jobs last year, and its AI-related revenue reached an annualized $2.3 billion in the quarter through March 2026.
