Minibus-truck crash in Chivhu, Zimbabwe, kills 27

Seven others were injured, and police said the foreign-plated truck struck while overtaking another vehicle.

At least 27 people were killed after a minibus carrying church worshippers collided head-on with a freight truck near Chivhu in central Zimbabwe. The crash occurred about 140 kilometers south of Harare on Aug. 28 at 18:30 GMT. Police said the foreign-plated truck was overtaking another vehicle when it hit the minibus carrying congregants to a conference. Seven others were injured, while the exact number of passengers in both vehicles was not known. Footage broadcast by public broadcaster ZBC showed the minibus badly damaged and burned. Road accidents are a frequent cause of death in Zimbabwe, where poorly maintained pothole-ridden roads and weak driving standards are common. Private minibuses, or kombis, have long been criticized for frequent overloading.
