Suspected cyberattack hit supermarket freezers in 7 European countries

What's new: temperatures in some units were set to 50C, forcing stores to dump food and shut down cooling systems.

A suspected cyberattack disrupted refrigerators and freezers at dozens of supermarkets across seven European countries on Monday, raising temperatures in some units to 50C. Delhaize stores in Belgium and Luxembourg were among the hardest hit, while smaller numbers of shops in Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia and Finland also reported problems. Sabcobel, which operates Delhaize’s systems, said the units’ evaporators were switched into defrost mode, echoing an October attack that struck hundreds of supermarkets in France. Retailers including ICA, Coop, Carrefour and Colruyt reported affected stores, and Belgium and Sweden’s cyber agencies said they were monitoring the incident. Local reports said the outages caused major food losses.
