Super Micro contractor pleads guilty in $2.5 billion AI server export case
What's new: Prosecutors say the scheme routed Nvidia-powered servers to China despite US export curbs tied to national security.
A contractor tied to Super Micro Computer pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to helping divert advanced AI servers with Nvidia chips to China in violation of US export controls. Ting-Wei "Willy" Sun pleaded guilty Oct. 9 to four counts, including conspiracy to violate export laws, smuggling, defrauding the United States and obstructing justice. Prosecutors charged Sun in March alongside Super Micro co-founder Yih-Shyan "Wally" Liaw and sales manager Ruei-Tsang "Steven" Chang in a scheme involving about $2.5 billion in US AI technology. The indictment says Sun helped conceal the exports by staging dummy servers in December 2025 and misleading a Commerce Department officer during an inspection after the real servers had already been diverted.
