Spain high-speed train crash kills at least 30 near Toledo
What's new: Service on the Madrid-Seville line was halted, and officials warned the death toll could keep rising.
At least 30 people were killed after one high-speed train struck the rear of another near Urda in Spain's Toledo province on Wednesday morning, derailing two cars and suspending traffic on the Madrid-Seville route. Regional officials in Castilla-La Mancha said the cause was still unclear. The crash involved trains operated by Renfe and Iryo, with 397 people aboard the Renfe service and 147 on the Iryo train. Emergency crews, including air ambulances and intensive care units, were sent to the scene, and local authorities opened a sports hall to assist passengers and the injured. The collision came nine months after another deadly crash involving the same operators on the same line.
