SpaceX locks in $40 billion debt package to buy AI chips

What's new: Musk said most of the callable financing is due in the first half of 2027 as SpaceX’s AI unit becomes its biggest business.

SpaceX has secured $40 billion in debt financing to buy graphics processing units used for artificial intelligence, Elon Musk said in a post on X. Musk said the company’s revenue from Starlink and launch services supported the deal and described SpaceX as investment grade. He later said the package mainly consists of callable debt for GPUs and is expected to arrive in the first and second quarters of 2027. The move points to the scale of AI infrastructure spending as companies race to build more computing capacity. SpaceX has expanded sharply in AI this year under the name “Super Intelligence,” or SI. In its latest earnings release, the unit posted third-quarter revenue of $7.56 billion, up from $813 million a year earlier, making it the company’s largest business segment.
