Southwest floods force evacuations as Colorado river nears 1911 mark
What's new: Arizona faced swift-water rescues and a missing person search while Pagosa Springs closed roads as the San Juan River surged.
Heavy rain set off flash flooding across the Southwest on Sunday, forcing evacuations in Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico as officials warned of dangerous river rises. In Pagosa Springs, Colorado, authorities warned the San Juan River could crest above 20 feet, higher than the roughly 17.8-foot peak recorded in the town's devastating 1911 flood. By sundown, the river had reached about 14 feet, and roads into and out of town were closed. In Arizona, Sedona, Camp Verde and Gisela ordered residents near creeks and rivers to leave, while Tucson crews carried out swift-water rescues. In Flagstaff, police searched for a man who fell into fast-moving floodwater and did not resurface.
