South Texas storms dump up to 16 inches, spin up San Antonio tornado

Why it matters: Flash flooding could worsen through Thursday, with 10 to 20 inches of rain possible and disaster declarations across dozens of counties.

Slow-moving storms soaked a broad stretch of South Texas on Wednesday, dropping as much as 16 inches of rain in parts of Uvalde County and triggering a tornado near Interstate 10 in northwestern San Antonio. No deaths or injuries were immediately reported, but officials warned flash flooding could intensify through Thursday evening. The National Weather Service said some areas could see 10 to 20 inches of rain before the system moves out. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued disaster declarations for dozens of counties. Uvalde officials said at least two dozen water rescues had been carried out, while Texas Parks and Wildlife said five people were rescued by a search team and four more by a local game warden.
