South Korea sends first container ship to Europe via Arctic

Why it matters: The 40- to 45-day trial could cut Asia-Europe shipping time by about 10 days but risks friction over Russian cooperation.

South Korea on Saturday sent its first trial container ship to Europe through the Arctic, betting that a route opened by melting sea ice can become a workable alternative to the Suez Canal. The PanStar Acro left Busan for Felixstowe in Britain, Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Gdansk in Poland on a voyage expected to last 40 to 45 days. Officials say the route can trim the trip by up to 35% and save fuel, supporting Seoul’s push to make Busan a bigger maritime hub by 2030. The test also raises political and legal risks because ships on the Northern Sea Route need Russian permits and may rely on Russian services, drawing concern from Western allies seeking to isolate Moscow over the war in Ukraine.
