South Korea sends first Arctic container voyage to Europe

Why it matters: The 40- to 45-day test could cut sailing time by up to 35%, but it needs Russian cooperation and carries sanctions risk.

South Korea on Saturday launched its first commercial container voyage to Europe through the Arctic, sending the PanStar Acro from Busan on a government-backed test of the Northern Sea Route. The 2,758-TEU ship is due to call at Felixstowe, Rotterdam and Gdansk before returning in a trip expected to last 40 to 45 days. Officials see the route as a way to turn Busan into a global maritime hub and establish regular Arctic trade by 2030. But the passage requires coordination with Russia, drawing concern from Western diplomats who want Moscow further isolated over the war in Ukraine. The Oceans Ministry has said the route could shorten voyages by as much as 35% versus the Suez Canal.
