South Jakarta plants rice in 1,200 used gallon jugs in Pasar Minggu
The 350-gallon pilot produced about 70 kilograms of paddy, and officials plan to expand the model to other kelurahan.
The South Jakarta municipal government and the DKI Jakarta DPRD planted rice in 1,200 used gallon jugs at RPTRA Belimbing in Pasar Minggu, Monday (27/7/2026). The program combines food security with waste management: organic waste is processed into fertilizer, while the used jugs serve as planting media. South Jakarta Mayor Syafrin Liputo said the move is being carried out as part of DKI Jakarta Governor Instruction No. 5 Tahun 2026 on waste sorting. An initial trial showed 350 jugs could produce about 70 kilograms of paddy. The South Jakarta administration said the model can use limited space in residential areas, help supply local food, and curb inflation. After rice, the program will also be developed for palawija, chilies, and pakcoy, and replicated to other kelurahan if the results are deemed successful.
