South Africans vote in local elections as ANC risks deeper losses
Why it matters: Results due Sunday could reshape coalition control of major cities and set the tone for the 2029 national election.
South Africans voted Wednesday in municipal elections that could further erode the African National Congress' grip on local power after years of anger over corruption, crime and failing basic services. Polls cited by Reuters suggest the ANC could fall below 40%, down from the first sub-50% result it posted in the 2021 local vote. More than 500 parties are contesting nearly 300 municipalities responsible for water, electricity and refuse collection. Johannesburg is the biggest prize, while Tshwane and eThekwini are also closely watched. The outcome could produce more fragile coalition governments and influence the ANC succession race as President Cyril Ramaphosa nears the end of his term as party leader in 2027.
