Sony, TSMC weigh $6.4 billion for Japan sensor venture

Sony Group and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co are in talks to put a combined 1 trillion yen, or about $6.4 billion, into a planned image sensor venture in Kumamoto, Japan, according to a person familiar with the matter. The companies are aiming to start production in 2029. The project would add production lines and development facilities at Sony’s existing sensor plant in southern Japan. Sony Semiconductor Solutions and TSMC are pursuing growth in sensors for AI-powered robots and autonomous vehicles. Sony is expected to control the joint venture, while Japan’s government may consider financial support, Trade Minister Ryosei Akazawa said.
