SMRT opens S$6 million AI bus control center for 1,200 vehicles

Singapore transport operator SMRT has opened a S$6 million AI-powered control center that monitors more than 1,200 buses in real time for safety and service problems. Launched Aug. 28 by Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow at Gali Batu Depot, the center has been operating since June and now oversees buses from the Gali Batu, Woodlands and Soon Lee depots, with Kim Chuan to be added later. SMRT said the system flags drowsy drivers, harsh braking, unsafe following distances, bus bunching and vehicle faults before breakdowns. It also uses sensors to detect wheelchair users boarding so controllers can check that chairs are secured before a bus moves off. Nearly 50 officers manage about 75 services under the Bus 4.0 program.
