Smallholder farmers manage 41% of Indonesia's palm oil

The smallholder plantations produce more than 16 million tons a year and support about 16.5 million jobs.

BPDP said smallholder farmers manage about 41% of Indonesia's palm oil industry, underscoring the large role of communities in the commodity supply chain. BPDP Director of Finance, General Affairs, Compliance and Risk Management Zaid Burhan Ibrahim presented the data at a media briefing on sustainable palm oil industry in Pangkalan Bun, Kotawaringin Barat Regency, Central Kalimantan, on Wednesday. According to BPDP, smallholder plantations are spread across Aceh, Sumatera Utara, Riau, Sumatera Selatan, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. Output is said to top more than 16 million tons a year, with productivity continuing to rise. BPDP also said the palm oil industry employs about 16.5 million workers, including in transportation, logistics, trade, processing, and UMKM.
