Singapore targets 10 local firms in first haze-law action
What's new: NEA is seeking records on Indonesian land concessions, corporate links and fire-control steps from firms including Wilmar and APP.
Singapore’s National Environment Agency has issued legal notices to 10 Singapore-registered palm oil and forestry companies, the first time it has used the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act against local firms. The companies include Wilmar International, Asia Pulp & Paper, Bumitama Agri, Golden Agri International and First Resources. NEA is demanding documents on their links to related companies in Singapore and Indonesia, the locations of Indonesian land concessions, and measures taken during the dry season to prevent or fight fires. The move follows earlier notices to 10 Indonesian companies over fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan that contributed to haze in Singapore. The government said it will trace corporate control and accountability across borders.
