Singapore studies undersea tunnel to Pulau Tekong, 500ha more land
Why it matters: the plan could ease military access, add training space and preserve 500 hectares for future civilian use.
Singapore is studying whether to build undersea tunnels linking the mainland to Pulau Tekong, a long-term infrastructure project Prime Minister Lawrence Wong set out in his National Day Rally speech on Aug. 23. Wong said bridges would interfere with busy shipping channels, making a tunnel the preferred option if the project proves feasible. He described it as a major engineering effort for a country that has built underground road tunnels but not undersea links of this scale. The government is also planning more land reclamation at southern Tekong, creating additional Singapore Armed Forces training space while leaving about 500 hectares, roughly the size of Toa Payoh, for possible civilian use later.
