Singapore seeks stiffer penalty after PSA fined S$225,000 in worker death
What's next: Both the Manpower Ministry and PSA have appealed, with prosecutors pushing for a S$300,000 to S$350,000 fine.
Singapore's Ministry of Manpower is seeking a higher penalty for PSA Singapore after the port operator was fined S$225,000 over a 2017 crane maintenance death at Keppel Terminal. PSA was convicted in March under the Workplace Safety and Health Act, and the fine was imposed on June 4. Prosecutors had argued for S$300,000 to S$350,000, saying the safety failures were systemic. PSA has also appealed its conviction and sentence. Worker Lee Swee Loong, 29, died on Sept. 20, 2017, after he was crushed between a rope drum and a trolley platform while inspecting a faulty gearbox on a Mitsui rubber tyred gantry crane.
