Singapore retook No. 1 in IMD competitiveness ranking for 2026
What’s new: It jumped to first in business efficiency, while Hong Kong rose to No. 2 and Switzerland fell to third.
Singapore returned to the top of the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking for 2026, moving up from second place last year among 70 economies. The annual index by the Institute for Management Development assesses economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency and infrastructure. Singapore’s rebound was driven by a sharp rise in business efficiency, where it climbed from eighth in 2025 to first this year. It held third place in government efficiency, improved to fifth in infrastructure and slipped from first to third in economic performance. Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong moved up to second, Taiwan ranked fourth and China rose to 12th.
