Singapore reshuffles Cabinet 14 months after last overhaul

What's new: K. Shanmugam became senior minister, Ng Chee Meng joined Cabinet and the changes take effect Monday.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong reshuffled Singapore's Cabinet on Wednesday, making several appointments as he pushed ahead with a leadership transition 14 months after the last round of changes. Wong said the moves were meant to keep balance in his team between experienced leaders and a new generation. K. Shanmugam was elevated to senior minister while keeping his roles as coordinating minister for national security and home affairs minister. Labor chief Ng Chee Meng entered the Cabinet as a minister in the Prime Minister's Office, and Jasmin Lau was promoted to senior minister of state and will concurrently serve as acting manpower minister. Wong said the timing was affected by the recent resignations of Koh Poh Koon and Associate Professor Faishal.
