Singapore opposition figure Kenneth Jeyaretnam dies at 67

What's new: The Reform Party leader had said he was seriously ill and receiving treatment in London, and a memorial will be held later.

Kenneth Jeyaretnam, secretary-general of Singapore’s Reform Party and a longtime opposition figure, died on July 18 at age 67. His wife, Amanda Jeyaretnam, wrote in a Facebook post on July 19 that he “died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family.” Funeral arrangements for a small family service are still being finalized, she said, with a public memorial to celebrate his life planned later. Jeyaretnam, the elder son of late opposition pioneer J.B. Jeyaretnam, took over the Reform Party in 2009 after his father’s death. He contested general elections in 2011, 2015 and 2020, but never won a seat. In a 2024 post, he said he was seriously ill and under medical care in London.
