Singapore officers seize 880 cartons of cigarettes from bus

Singapore authorities arrested a 40-year-old Malaysian man after officers found more than 880 cartons and 110 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden in a Malaysia-registered bus at Woodlands Checkpoint. The bus was stopped on June 15 after Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officers profiled it for enhanced checks. During the search, officers used an electric circular saw to cut open parts of the vehicle and uncovered the cigarettes in a modified engine compartment. The suspect and the seized goods were referred to Singapore Customs for investigation. ICA said the checkpoint operation was part of efforts to block contraband from entering Singapore.
