Singapore mosques adopt child-safety framework after abuse case

Singapore's Islamic Religious Council will introduce a common safeguarding framework across mosques after a sexual abuse case involving two boys at a mosque. MUIS said the plan will define safeguarding principles, spell out responsibilities for mosque staff and volunteers, and set reporting and escalation procedures when concerns arise. It will also train personnel to spot abuse or neglect, respond to disclosures and maintain professional boundaries. The council said it will step up oversight of informal gatherings involving minors, with checks on recurring mentoring or teaching activities and intervention over unauthorized teaching or boundary violations. District offices will conduct periodic audits and spot checks covering lighting, visibility, CCTV and signage.
