Singapore minister Faishal Ibrahim quits over online messages
What's new: police found no criminal offense by either party, but Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the conduct failed political standards.
Singapore Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Faishal Ibrahim resigned from the Cabinet, Parliament and the ruling People’s Action Party after what he called a lapse of judgment in his interactions with a woman from the public. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said most of the contact took place through online messages, with some meetings on the sidelines of public events. Both later accused each other of harassment and police investigated, but after consulting the Attorney-General’s Chambers, authorities found no criminal offense and will take no action. Wong said the separate issue was whether Faishal met the standards expected of a political office holder and MP. Zaqy Mohamad will take over the Muslim affairs portfolio on an acting basis.
