Singapore maps S$5.3 billion grid upgrade as power demand climbs

What's new: The plan adds five gas plants by 2031, targets 4 GWp of solar by 2035 and more than 1 GWh of storage by 2030.

Singapore rolled out a five-year energy infrastructure plan as rising demand from semiconductor plants, data centers and electric transport strains the power system. The Energy Market Authority said peak electricity demand, 8.6 gigawatts in August 2026, could reach 9.9 GW to 13 GW by 2031. The plan includes up to S$5.3 billion for grid expansion from 2025 to 2029, seven new substations by 2031 and a transmission network expansion to 9,100 kilometers by 2030 from 7,700 km. Singapore also expects five new natural gas plants to start operating between 2026 and 2031, lifting generation capacity by about 26%, while energy storage is set to rise from about 350 MWh to just over 1 GWh by 2030.
