Singapore faces a higher risk of transboundary haze in the coming week as dry weather persists and fire hotspots continue in parts of Indonesia, the National Environment Agency said on Aug. 9. Hotspots and smoke plumes have been observed over Sumatra and Kalimantan, and prevailing southeasterly winds could carry smoke toward Singapore, particularly from southern Sumatra. At 1 p.m. on Aug. 9, the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index in central Singapore was 81, in the moderate range. The agency said 28 public bodies in the Haze Task Force are prepared to activate response plans if air quality worsens into the unhealthy range above 100.
