Singapore detains 1 man, restricts teen under ISA over Gaza-linked radicalization

Why it matters: Authorities said the 30-year-old was willing to attack in Singapore if Hamas directed him, making him an imminent security threat.

Singapore authorities issued Internal Security Act orders against two self-radicalized citizens whose extremist views were fueled by the Israel-Hamas war, the Internal Security Department said June 24. Tarmizi Mohd Taha, 30, received a detention order after investigators found he wanted to join Hamas in the Palestinian territories and was prepared to carry out attacks in Singapore if instructed. Cyrus Dzulqarnain Al-Shahriar, 19, was placed under a restriction order after adopting a mix of extremist beliefs, including pro-Hamas, anti-LGBTQ and violent accelerationist views. ISD said the cases were unrelated, but both were driven by online propaganda tied to the Gaza conflict. The two are the seventh and eighth Singaporeans dealt with under the ISA over radicalization linked to the war.
