Singapore cyclist appeals 7-day sentence in Punggol bus fight

What's next: The appeal will be heard later after both men already completed matching seven-day detention orders.

A Singapore cyclist who was convicted over a roadside fight with a bus driver in Punggol has appealed after finishing a seven-day short detention order. Court judgments identified the cyclist as Chia Meng Chiang, 49, who was found guilty of affray after a November 2024 confrontation with bus driver Khong Heng Chuen, 55, along Punggol East. Video from the bus showed Khong braking hard after Chia drifted into the lane, then the pair arguing before Chia took Khong's phone and the clash turned physical. Judge Cheng Yuxi rejected Chia's self-defense claim, finding he escalated the dispute and later used force when there was no reasonable fear of attack. Khong had earlier pleaded guilty to causing hurt and also received a seven-day order.
