Singapore court seeks treatment order for man in Joo Seng fire
What's next: Liu Zheyuan is due back in court in July after pleading guilty to mischief by fire in a blaze that sent 10 people to hospitals.
A Singapore court ordered a report on whether Liu Zheyuan should receive a mandatory treatment order after he pleaded guilty to starting a fire in his Joo Seng Road flat that left 10 people needing hospital treatment, including two firefighters. Prosecutors said Liu, 44, lit charcoal in a stainless steel pot in his living room on May 4 because he believed an upstairs neighbor was attacking him with laser beams and electrical currents. The flames spread from a plastic curtain through the unit. Liu warned neighbors to evacuate and called the Singapore Civil Defence Force, but the blaze still caused an estimated S$80,000 to S$100,000 in damage. Court documents said he had a delusional disorder at the time but was not of unsound mind. Sentencing was adjourned to July.
