Singapore court awards 2 ministers S$230,000 each in Bloomberg libel case
Why it matters: The High Court found malice and aggravated the damages, saying the article implied the ministers hid property deals to avoid scrutiny over possible money laundering.
Singapore’s High Court awarded K Shanmugam and Tan See Leng S$230,000 each after ruling Bloomberg and reporter Low De Wei had maliciously defamed them in a December 2024 article about Good Class Bungalow transactions. Justice Audrey Lim found parts of the report were knowingly false or published without regard for whether they were true, and said Bloomberg’s decision to remove the paywall widened the harm. The judge held that readers would take the story to mean the ministers structured their property dealings to hide them from scrutiny, including possible money laundering. The case centered on Shanmugam’s former Queen Astrid Park home and Tan’s purchase of a bungalow in Brizay Park.
