Singapore clears 900 MW of solar imports from Malaysia for 2029
Why it matters: The two projects would help supply about 1 million four-room HDB homes and advance Singapore’s 2035 clean-power target.
Singapore’s energy regulator granted conditional approval to two projects to import 900 megawatts of solar power from Malaysia, with commercial operations targeted around 2029. The Energy Market Authority approved 300 MW for Sembcorp Utilities and 600 MW for Southern Solar Alliance, a unit of Ditrolic Energy Holdings. The electricity would come from solar and battery storage systems in Johor, including Sembcorp’s planned floating solar project at Linggiu Reservoir. EMA said the companies still need cross-border approvals, power purchase agreements, financing and other development milestones before reaching financial close. Singapore aims to import about 6 gigawatts of low-carbon electricity by 2035, roughly one-third of projected demand.
