Singapore blocks 14 anti-Indian posts linked to China-based platform
Why it matters: Authorities treated the Chinese-language posts as a threat to racial harmony and ordered YouTube, Facebook and X to disable local access.
Singapore ordered social media platforms to block 14 posts that targeted the country’s Indian community, after investigators found the material most likely originated from a China-based platform and then spread elsewhere online. The Ministry of Home Affairs said the Chinese-language posts used footage from Little India and a religious festival in Pagoda Street to claim Singapore was being “overcrowded” with Indians. Police issued disabling directions under the Online Criminal Harms Act covering YouTube, Facebook and X. The ministry said the content likely breached Section 298A of the Penal Code by promoting hostility between racial groups. Law Minister Edwin Tong said there was no evidence of a coordinated state campaign and described the posts as likely generated by foreign netizens.
