Singapore bars 9 drivers after 30 traffic offenses at Woodlands

Why it matters: Another 21 motorists were forced to U-turn and rejoin the line as heavy holiday traffic hit the land checkpoint.

Singapore immigration officers caught 30 motorists committing traffic offenses at Woodlands Checkpoint during the Vesak Day long weekend from May 28 to June 1, with nine drivers of foreign-registered vehicles barred from entering Singapore. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said the violations were detected as vehicles were leaving the country and included crossing double white lines, illegal right turns, queue-cutting and stopping in ways that caused danger or obstruction. Another 21 motorists were ordered to make a U-turn and re-queue, while 15 were referred to the Traffic Police for further action. The agency had stepped up enforcement after warning that heavy traffic was expected over the holiday period.
