Shopee cuts hundreds of developer jobs in global AI pivot
What's new: The cuts equal about 8% of Shopee's developer workforce and hit roles including quality assurance.
Shopee has cut hundreds of developer jobs worldwide as parent company Sea reshapes parts of the business around artificial intelligence. The layoffs began this week and affect roughly 8% of Shopee’s developer workforce, with quality assurance among the roles hit. More reductions could follow. The move comes as Sea pushes harder into AI under CEO Forrest Li, who has argued the company could greatly expand its value by leaning into the technology. In February, Sea said it would work with Google to apply AI across its operations, including shopping agents. Investors have been watching Sea closely after its stock fell from September highs as higher oil prices weighed on consumer demand and operating costs.
