Senate passes $70 billion bill for ICE, Border Patrol
What’s next: The measure goes to the House next week after a 52-47 Senate vote split mostly along party lines.
The Senate approved a roughly $70 billion immigration enforcement package early Friday, sending major new funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol toward the House. The bill passed 52-47 after an overnight voting session, with Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski joining Democrats in opposition.
The measure would finance the agencies for the rest of President Donald Trump’s term. Lawmakers rejected amendments aimed at limiting a $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund tied to people who claim they were harmed by government overreach. The package also left out $1 billion Trump had sought for White House security upgrades and a proposed White House ballroom. House lawmakers are not expected to take up the bill until next week.
