Senate panel examines AI jobs threat as Anthropic pledges $200 million

What's new: Anthropic paired the hearing with proposals on job tracking, hiring incentives and possible income support funded by AI firms.

The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee held a hearing Thursday on artificial intelligence and its economic effects as Anthropic rolled out a $200 million Economic Futures Research Fund focused on AI's impact on jobs and growth. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei argued that AI could disrupt the labor market more deeply and for longer than past technology shifts. He proposed better data collection on job displacement, incentives to reduce layoffs and possible support such as universal basic income if labor demand falls more permanently. PBS reported that Anthropic is also setting up a $150 million national fellowship program. President Donald Trump said he plans to meet soon with leading AI executives about ways of “giving back” to the public.
