Senate blocks 48-47 bid to curb Trump’s Iran war powers

What’s next: Senators in both parties are still demanding details of Trump’s Iran ceasefire framework before another war-powers vote.

The Senate voted 48-47 on Tuesday to block a Democratic effort to require congressional authorization for the U.S. war in Iran, as lawmakers awaited details of President Donald Trump’s emerging ceasefire framework with Tehran. Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia sponsored the measure, the latest in a string of Democratic war-powers pushes since U.S. and Israeli air attacks on Iran began in February. Four Republicans — Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul — joined most Democrats in support, while Democrat John Fetterman voted with most Republicans against it. The vote came after the White House and Iran moved toward a ceasefire and further talks, but senators said they still had not received the text or a briefing on Trump’s memorandum of understanding.
