Senate backs 50-48 measure to halt U.S. military action in Iran
Why it matters: The vote exposed Republican unease with the war as the Pentagon seeks $80 billion and Trump pursues a 60-day Iran deal.
The Senate approved a war powers resolution Tuesday directing President Donald Trump to end U.S. military involvement against Iran, passing the measure 50-48 in a rare rebuke from the Republican-led chamber. Four Republicans — Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Rand Paul and Bill Cassidy — joined nearly all Democrats, while Democrat John Fetterman voted no. The House had already passed the resolution earlier this month. The measure is likely to remain largely symbolic because, under the 1973 War Powers Act, it does not go to the White House for a signature, and the administration argues it is not binding. The vote came as the Pentagon seeks $80 billion related to the war and Trump tries to turn a new memorandum with Iran into a broader agreement within 60 days.
