Sen. Chris Murphy remained hospitalized after weekend stroke

What's new: Murphy was awake, alert and improving, and his office said he had already cast an early ballot in Connecticut.

Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut remained hospitalized Tuesday after suffering a stroke over the weekend, according to his office. Murphy began experiencing symptoms Saturday while attending his son's hockey game and was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Johns Hopkins for monitoring. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said Sunday that he was responding well to treatment and was awake and alert. On Tuesday, communications director Josh Sorbe said Murphy was continuing to improve. The Democrat is not on the ballot this year, but he had spent recent weeks campaigning for Democratic candidates ahead of the midterm elections. The Senate is scheduled to return to session Monday.
