A second candidate named Dan Sullivan has advanced to Alaska's U.S. Senate general election, setting up an unusual ranked-choice contest alongside incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan and Democratic former U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola. Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from Petersburg, finished among the top four in the Aug. 18 primary after winning a court fight over his place on the ballot. State election officials listed him as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., with no party affiliation, while the incumbent appeared as Dan S. Sullivan, Republican and incumbent. Alaska had not yet determined the fourth general-election spot as absentee and overseas ballots continued to be counted.
