Samsung Q2 operating profit jumps 19-fold to 89.4 trillion won

What's new: The preliminary result beat analyst forecasts as AI-driven shortages lifted DRAM and NAND prices sharply.

Samsung Electronics posted preliminary second-quarter operating profit of 89.4 trillion won, up roughly 19-fold from a year earlier and above analyst estimates, as demand for memory chips used in AI data centers pushed prices higher. Revenue for the April-to-June period reached 171 trillion won, also topping expectations. Analysts cited strong sales of high-bandwidth memory as well as tighter supply of conventional DRAM and NAND chips. The company is expected to release full earnings, including net income and divisional results, later this month. Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron have all benefited from the AI boom, while investors remain focused on how long heavy spending on AI infrastructure can sustain the chip rally.
