SAKA plans Pekawai exploration well in East Kalimantan in Q3 2026

The 12,000-foot SM-1 appraisal well could also pave the way for a unitization scheme with Pertamina Hulu Mahakam.

PT Saka Energi Indonesia is preparing to drill one exploration well in the Pekawai Working Area, East Kalimantan, in the third quarter of 2026 in a bid to find new oil and gas reserves. The PGN subsidiary said the Saka Manpatu-1 appraisal well, or SM-1, will be drilled to about 12,000 feet. The Pekawai WK has been managed through PT Saka Energi Sepinggan since SKK Migas designated it as gross split operator on May 16, 2018. SAKA Exploration and Development Director Fuji Koesumadewi said the 1,555-square-kilometer area has two main prospects, SM-1 and Hanna, in offshore areas. Since 2022, SAKA has been working with Pertamina Hulu Mahakam to mature the prospects. Approval to extend the exploration period until May 15, 2028 provides room for a more comprehensive program, including the possibility of development through unitization with the Manpatu Field.
