Russian strikes wound 20 in Kyiv, damage Lavra monastery

What's new: The attack cut power to 140,000 Kyiv residents, while Poland scrambled jets as air raid alerts spread across Ukraine.

Russian air strikes on Kyiv wounded 20 people, knocked out power for about 140,000 residents and damaged the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Ukrainian authorities said June 15. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said drone debris set homes and cars on fire, while a high-rise apartment building also burned during the overnight assault. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said the monastery, founded in 1051, was seriously damaged. Elsewhere, a second strike in Kharkiv killed five emergency rescuers and injured at least five more, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said, while three people, including a child, were wounded in Sumy. Poland put fighter jets, air defenses and radar on alert as the barrage widened.
