Russian strikes hit Danube port at Izmail, damage vessel in Odesa

Why it matters: Izmail is Ukraine’s biggest Danube port, a trade lifeline near Romania, and four people were injured in the Odesa attack.

Russian forces struck port infrastructure in Ukraine’s Odesa region overnight, hitting the Izmail district on the Danube and a separate site in Odesa, Ukrainian and Russian authorities said Monday. Fires in Izmail were later extinguished, Ukrainian officials said. In Odesa, regional governor Oleh Kiper said a Togo-flagged civilian vessel was damaged and four people were hurt. Izmail, near the Romanian border, is Ukraine’s largest Danube port and a key route for trade and transport. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it targeted what it called military facilities in the port, including a berth for military cargo, hangars with Western equipment and depots for naval drones.
