Russia, Ukraine start Oleshky ceasefire for aid and evacuations

What's new: The truce covers only the frontline town, while strikes continued in Kyiv and other areas.

Russia and Ukraine began a localized ceasefire in Oleshky on Oct. 27 to open a humanitarian operation in the Russian-occupied town, where residents face severe shortages of food, medicine and basic services. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it halted shelling toward Kherson from 4 a.m. Moscow time, and Ukraine’s parliamentary commissioner for human rights, Dmytro Lubinets, said Kyiv was honoring the deal. Oleshky, on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River opposite Kherson, was seized by Russian forces in the first days of the 2022 invasion. The BBC reported Ukraine estimates about 6,000 people, including 200 children, remain in and around the town. Fighting continued elsewhere, with fresh strikes reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Pavlohrad, Bryansk and Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia.
