Russia's Novaya Gazeta to close after crackdown on newsroom
Why it matters: The shutdown erases one of Russia's best-known independent outlets as wartime censorship tightens.
Novaya Gazeta, one of Russia's most prominent independent newspapers, said it will shut its remaining operations on Nov. 9 after what it described as a coordinated campaign of state pressure. The paper said authorities stripped away its license, blocked its website, took its financial support and premises, and pursued criminal cases tied to senior staff. Founded in 1993 with backing linked to Mikhail Gorbachev, Novaya Gazeta became known for investigations into corruption and hard-hitting coverage of Russian politics and the wars in Chechnya. It halted print publication in Russia in 2022 but kept producing online journalism from Moscow as pressure on media intensified after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
