RTS Link could drive S$290 million yearly spending outflow from Singapore

What's new: A study projects 11.2 million extra Singapore-Johor Bahru round trips a year after the rail link opens in January 2027.

A study released Thursday found the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link could widen Singapore’s retail and dining spending outflow by S$290 million a year after service begins in January 2027. Singapore residents are projected to spend S$1.05 billion more annually in Johor Bahru, while Johor Bahru visitors are expected to spend S$756 million more in Singapore. The report, commissioned by the Singapore Business Federation, Restaurant Association of Singapore and Singapore Retailers Association, estimates a 51% jump in Singapore outbound trips, adding 11.2 million round trips a year. Groceries, drug stores, dining and beauty services are expected to draw the biggest share of spending in Johor Bahru, while Singapore could gain more from premium retail, entertainment and events.
