RSCM prepares first LVAD implant for advanced heart failure

The first scheduled patient is a 45-year-old woman whose heart pump function has fallen to 14 percent.

RSCM is preparing Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) services for patients with advanced heart failure, with the first implant scheduled for a 45-year-old woman. The mechanical heart pump support device is implanted in surgery to help the left ventricle pump blood throughout the body when heart function drops sharply. Based on Global Burden of Disease 2019 data cited by RSCM, the prevalence of heart failure in Indonesia is about 900-1.000 cases per 100.000 people, with a mortality rate of 34,1 percent. Birry Karim, head of RSCM's cardiovascular department, said the service complements drug therapy and heart transplantation. RSCM is also preparing to use AI for patient selection, clinical protocol development, and post-operative support through an LVAD Coordinator.
