Romania Social Democrats put forward Grindeanu for prime minister

What's next: If a second nominee fails to win backing in parliament, Romania must hold new elections.

Romania's Social Democrats, the largest party in parliament, put forward party leader Sorin Grindeanu for prime minister as parties try to build a new government after the pro-European coalition collapsed last month. The Social Democrats triggered the crisis in early May by leaving the coalition and joining the far-right opposition to bring down Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The three other parties from the outgoing coalition say they will not govern with the Social Democrats again, leaving no bloc with enough seats for a majority. A liberal nominee picked by the president already failed to secure support, and parties are now trying to agree on a minority government to avoid a snap election.
